Overcoming First Date Nerves

So you are going on a first date, nervous? No doubt you are even if just a little, the fact is everyone feels nervous on a first and that is what should help you relax. If you are nervous then it is almost certain that your date is feeling the pressure too. Overcoming first date nerves is not not impossible though.

Like a job interview it is the fear of doing something silly that will destroy your chances. Think back though, how many times have you done something so silly it has spoilt a first date? I bet it’s never, sure you may have made one or two little mistakes but again that is quite normal and often helps rather than hinders your chances.

So the question to ask yourself is how on earth do you overcome these nerves so that you can really relax and enjoy your evening? Surprisingly there are several things you can do to help you stay calm. Although they may not remove all traces of your nerves they will certainly help you feel a little better.

The first thing you should do is make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your agreed meeting point. The last thing you want on top of everything else is to be worried about being late for your first date.

Secondly make sure you wear what you feel comfortable in. Do not dress to impress so much that you feel awkward wearing what you do. It is important to be yourself and dressing as yourself is the foundation to doing that.

The third tip is to ensure you have pre-planned some questions you will ask your date. It could be something simple such as asking them if they have been to a certain restaurant or if they have seen a certain film. If you have some questions like these up your sleeve then you can help avoid any awkward silences.

The fourth suggestion is that you are very careful with what you drink. Sure, a few glasses of wine may relax you and help the conversation flow better but don’t overdo it. There is nothing worse than getting a little too drunk on a first date. If you cannot control your alcohol then avoid it, don’t be afraid to stick to soft-drinks. In fact, drive to the venue if you have to so you have an excuse for avoiding alcohol.

Finally you should remind yourself that if it doesn’t work out then it’s not the end of the world, there will be other first dates in your life. This can help you to relax and pretend you are spending the evening with a friend or a new work collegue and it’s really not as important as your nerves are telling you.

Overall a first date should be enjoyable, try not to let your nerves get to you too much, remember that the other person is likely to be feeling exactly the same as you.

First Date Do’s and Don’ts

On your first date you must be very careful about few things, otherwise if you fail to impress on the first date, you may not get the second chance. Here are a few do’s and don’ts on your first date:

Do’s:

Be punctual, don’t be late. Otherwise you may be observed as disrespectful or unreliable.
Plan your date properly keeping in mind the likings of your match.
Keep your date excited with surprises.
Be well presentable; Well dressed, properly washed, shined shoes etc. It is not to impress your date but to show proper respect and importance for the first date.
Behave decently and give proper respect to your date.
You must have an excellent table manner which is most important factor. With every action of yours you will be judged by your date.
Choose appropriate location giving your date full comfort.
Properly communicate, listen to other, allow to speak and you also make some good conversation.
Be most realistic. Don’t have high expectation. Be cool and enjoy your first date.
Turn off your cell phone or put it in vibratory mode.
Be positive and show confidence.
Trust your date.

Don’ts:

Don’t go overboard where as dress and make up are concerned. Try to be as natural as possible.
Never monopolize the conversation. Ask questions on the topics your date is communicating.
Don’t forget to smile.
Don’t talk negative.
Don’t pretend to be someone else. Be truthful and transparent.
Don’t discuss or complain on your previous relationship.
Don’t think or discuss on any office related topic or any other work not relevant to your date.
Don’t talk too much about yourself, as you are not sure about the end relationship of the date.
Don’t ask awkward question so that your date becomes nervous.
Don’t get drunk.
Don’t lie; otherwise you can come to the street.
Don’t pursue for sex after your partner has said no.

Be perfect on your first date and show gentle manners to make the first date a successful one.
